- Assessing the Value of Your Technology by J. W. Tipping, E. Zeffren and A. R. Fusfeld; Research-Technology Management, Sept-Oct 1995, 22-39. Click here to request more information.
OVERVIEW: R&D's role in the innovation process can be meaningfully represented by a heirarchy of managerial factors (The Technology Value Pyramid) that provide the foundations, links to strategy and financial outcomes for the corporation. The recognition of thes TVP factors, together with an assembled menu of metrics, allows the model to be used to track the contribution to innovation performance at different levels of the TVP. The TVP model can be used to track the performance both prospectively and retrospectively, to diagnose weaknesses in the R&D organization and to plan for improvement in R&D contribution to the corporation. The various R&D stakeholders have different interests and persp[ectives on the innovation process, and these are accommodated by the TVP model and the menu of metrics.
- Supporting Strategy With Competitive Analysis by Mathias M. Coburn, Daniel J. Greenwood, and Martha R. Matteo, Research•Technology Magazine, September-October 2002, 43-47. Click here to request more information.
OVERVIEW: Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (BIPI) conducted a benchmarking study to assess the state of the art and future trends in a fast-moving area of drug discovery. As a result, five key technologies and processes were selected for comparison with internal practices. Gaps were identified, which then had to be prioritized for management action. These included well-established technologies and processes as well as growth and emerging technologies. A strategic planning framework was selected, which permitted consideration of these differences, and the perceivedconsequences of being a "leader," "adopter" (fast follower) or "follower" in each. BIPI's relative position was determined for each and the consequences for the Company assessed. The counterintuitive results led to changes in both strategy and implementation.
